Alan Shearer believes Harry Kane should quit his boyhood club Tottenham if they fail to lift a trophy in the next 12 months.

After seeing Tottenham reach the Champions League final last season, Kane's team have endured a slide. Mauricio Pochettino was sacked, Jose Mourinho replaced him and Spurs are currently eighth in the Premier League.

'My guess is, if he doesn't win anything in the next 12 months then he has to leave,' Shearer said to the Match of the Day: Top 10 podcast.

'He'll do another year, I think, and if nothing comes in terms of trophies, then he'll be off.'

Kane could also be the man to dethrone Shearer as the Premier League's all-time top scorer.

The Spurs man has a current tally of 136 and Shearer's record stands at 260.

'It depends on his fitness,' Shearer said. 'Where he is and what success he's had at whatever club he's at – whether that's at Spurs or somewhere else.

'It's going to be hard for him. He's on 136 and there's a lot of 'ifs' being asked; if he stays fit or if he stays in the Premier League. It's going to be tough, but it's going to go one day.'

Kane is currently overcoming a hamstring tear sustained against Southampton on New Year's Day.

Kane told Tottenham's website on Tuesday that he is pleased with the progress of his recovery.

'I'm good. From a rehab point of view and personal point of view, I'm doing really well,' Kane said.

'I'm at a good stage now and just working hard, doing a lot of recovery, a lot of rehab and just waiting to see what happens to the season.'
